Chassidic Egal

From: Rabbi David Seidenberg (Berkley Ca.) 9-22-05

rebduvid86@hotmail.com

Ten years ago on Shabbat B'reishit, the year after Reb Shlomo died, I
founded a Hasidic egalitarian minyan in New York City with the help of a
great community of committed Jews from many walks of life, including
ex-Yeshiva-niks and current Orthodox yidn, Conservative and Reform rabbis,
etc etc. As far as I have been able to determine, ours was the first
ongoing minyan ever with the intention to integrate Hasidic and egalitarian
davening.

This coming Shabbat B'reishit will be the tenth anniversary of its first
meeting. I have been wondering about using the anniversary to promote the
integration of Hasidic practices, learning, and nusach into the services at
liberal or egalitarian shuls and minyanim. Our minyan may have been the
first ongoing minyan of its kind, but the experiment of davening in this way
was done before then and has continued in many places many times since.

In celebration of that first meeting of the minyan, I'm planning a Hasidishe
egalitarian davening at Workmen's Circle in Los Angeles, this coming Shabbat
Bereishit, October 28. One approach to the anniversary would be to provide
synagogues with help in putting on a full service using Hasidic nusach
(including but not limited to Reb Shlomo's tunes), or to get folks to
organize a davenning in their homes for that week.

Another possibility is to offer through a website a variety of materials
shuls could use on that shabbat this year to bring Chasidus into their
davening, and to publicize it widely. There could be liturgy and nigunim,
along with reflection pieces, d'var Torah material, and perhaps some more
scholarly material on Hasidic davening. We would ask shuls around the world
to use one of the pieces offered on the site that Shabbat. For example,
shuls that don't do Ana Bakoach could introduce it along with a good
translation and nigun, all be available to download. Perhaps we could
include a d'var Torah from Reb Naftali Citron encouraging people to learn
about Chasidus in non-Orthodox settings. If this would be politically
viable for him, I can't think of a better way to embody the ideals of the
minyan of making bridges between Orthodox-identified and liberal
Judaism-identified Jews, and to give chizuk to people willing to try this
approach.

I also thought I would like to dedicate the project to Jane Doe, who was
one of the most devoted and inspirational members of the minyan. She died
in 1996. But I would have to do more research on how this would affect her
legacy - she is most remembered in the Orthodox community in connection with
Drisha, and I don't know if her involvement in an egalitarian minyan would
make anyone uncomfortable.

This is how far I've gotten in my thinking thus far. I've written to Shaul
Magid, one of the people who helped me found the minyan, for his advice, and
I might also write to Michael Strassfeld and Mindy Ribner for ideas. I'm
open to suggestions.

I'm looking forward to hearing what you think about this.

blessings and shanah tovah,

David Seidenberg

needelr@aol.com US Cell: 646-372-8494

i wanna open up a tea shop in jerusalem, open late at night, serving a grain and bean dish, where culture and healing and interaction can develop. i want it to be in nachlaot, i'm thinking on even sapir street.
I'd like to have articles and musicians circulating there, and really make something good able to come up out through it. and i'd like to have investors, would you happen to know of people who'd want to involve themselves into such a project financially? or someone who would know such someones? if you get any ideas, let I know.

1 Page Play requests. Frum Theatre Company.

Nov. 14, 2005

From: Yishai Freedman. allisvain@gmail.com

Hello Friends-
This this is Yishai Freedman. Most of you know me well, some of you I
have only met once and a few I have never met (but given you email in
confidence that we would get along).
For a few years now I have been threatening to start some type of
theatre community for Halakhically engaged Jewish folk. In conjunction
with some great people in Baltimore, we are producing a one page play
festival and you are all invited to participate.
First things first, we are looking for plays that are one page long.
The only restrictions are that it be no longer than a page long and
that it be appropriate for "frum" audiences and actors, what ever that
might mean. Be daring, be bold, push boundaries and do in a page.
We intend to produce these plays so we also need actors, directors,
designers, stage managers, musicians, magicians dancers etc.
This is a great way connect with other Jewish artists and have a good
time.
If you are interested please send your play submissions, resumes, or
informal letters of interest to me at: allisvain@gmail.com
Be sure to include how you would like to contribute (i.e. actor,
director, magician...) and your contact info.
We have set an informal deadline of Monday the 21st of Nov. good
luck. Spread the word.
stay connected

Rosh Hashanah Retreat Just Outside Of Boston- Reminder

From: amihai zippor <info@amihai.com>
Date: Aug 3, 2005 11:04 AM

hello friends,

PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO OTHERS....AND REPLY ASAP!!!

As this Rosh Hashanah is only months away, I need help making sure my small
community in Winthrop MA (just outside of Boston) is able to have a minyan
and proper davening.

At the same time, I would like this special event to incorporate learning,
meditation, healing and personal growth for all who are present.

I'm looking to see if there is interest for a group to come to this small
beach front town for the Jewish New Year to give support to the community
and create a special atmosphere for the few Jews that remain.

Though Rosh Hashanah is full of davening and eating and more davening and
eating, I want to encourage the participants to have an active role in the
schedule. Would you like to give a shiur? Would you like to teach something?

Don't worry, if you'd like to just get away from the city and have a new
experience for Rosh Hashanah, that's fine too. Winthrop is a small town
surrounded on three sides by water and there's plenty of nature to explore.

Please pass this information on and respond ASAP if you or anyone you know
may be interested.

Further details will be provided then.

The intention is to keep the cost low with meals (food) being the only
factor. I'm looking into the possibility of having guests sleep amongst the
community since the local inns are still very expensive at that time of
year. There is no charge for tickets or anything like that.

B'H, with help, an open mind, and working together, this could be a great
success.

Thank you

Amihai

PS -Erev Rosh Hashanah is Monday Oct 3rd, first day Tuesday Oct 4th ,
Second day Wednesday Oct 5th.

From: FLYING BUBBE, the Puppet Theater Company

email: Harveystein@aol.com

www.flyingbubbe.com

My girlfriend and I just started. Could you possibly put us on your "Community Links" page?
www.flyingbubbe.com - "Puppet Theater with an aroma of Yiddishkeit"
and maybe in the "Womb Room"? Here's some text about us:
Flying Bubbe, a Puppet Theater Company "with an aroma of Yiddishkeit" was
recently started by Vered Post, Israeli actress/writer, and Harvey Stein, a
Jewish-American actor/writer. With Flying Bubbe we pool our skills and desires to
help create funny, uplifting puppet story theater for children and adults. Our
shows are mostly in English, but include a sprinkling of Hebrew and Yiddish.
We are available to perform in Jewish and public schools, parties, and other
events.
We just got a cover story in Yedioth Aharanot, the Israeli newspaper in New
York City.
Please check out our website for details and cool photos: www.flyingbubbe.com
and give us a call (718-204-0707) or email (flyingbubbe@aol.com) for further
details.
My other big project now is a feature film project "Scuzzy" --a vision of
peace for the future--the main three characters are a jewish woman, a
chinese-american guy, and an Iraqi guy. The story is a love triangle, and a thriller.
It's a low budget indie and we have about a third of the money already raised.
Claude thought maybe you might have a lead on a loft space or gallery that
might want to partner with us to help us have a staged reading of the "Scuzzy"
script in the next couple of months. It would be a great opportunity for
exposure for the gallery--we would invite potential investors and other pivotal
folks to the reading. If you can think of any space in New York, Jersey City, etc.
that might be open to helping us, that would be great!
My vision for "Scuzzy" is that in the story, as well as in the production,
jews and arabs would be working/creating side by side.

Dear New York Chevre, Tu Bish'vat seder

rebduvid86@hotmail.com

Elat Chayyim in upstate New York is interested in holding a Kabbalistic and
ecological Tu Bish'vat seder on the Sunday evening February 12 that I would
lead. They are wondering whether we could get enough numbers for a
program - there would be a charge but it would not be great. Do you think
you would be interested? Please let me know ASAP so they and I can make a
good decision about this. They need a minimum of 10 folks to make it work -
I think we can get over 20 if the travel is not too great a hurdle.

Thanks,

Rabbi David Seidenberg
